McKenna To Attend Poynter Institute Program: St. Petersburg, FL

The Loeb Finalist experience inspired me to look for opportunities to learn more about journalism and digital media from the pros. I’ve been applying for fellowships and programs that can help me find more people doing what I do and more support for future plans.

One place that’s well known to professional journalists is the Poynter Institute.

The Poynter Institute is a school dedicated to teaching and inspiring journalists and media leaders. It promotes excellence and integrity in the practice of craft and in the practical leadership of successful businesses. It stands for a journalism that informs citizens and enlightens public discourse. It carries forward Nelson Poynter’s belief in the value of independent journalism.

I’ve been selected to attend a program called, Critical Tools for the Non-Traditional Journalist. It’s part of the Sense-Making series funded by the Ford Foundation.

I’ll learn what it takes to make a blog, online community site or niche digital publication successful. The seminar is intended for citizens who want to make a difference via the web, bloggers or amateur journalists with a passion for news. I hope to also meet some professional journalists striking out on their own.

If you are in the Tampa or St. Petersburg area and would like to meet while I’m in town October 24-29, drop me a line at fmckenna@mckennapartners.com

See you in the Sunshine State!
